Page layout design is one area of media publishing that involves the design and creation of pages. Therefore, the employee will review the directions to design the layout of a page. The job also involves selecting images to be included on the final page. Anyone working as a designer in this field can be employed by a variety of businesses such as IT companies, magazines or advertising firms.
Personality Skills Needed
Page layout designers are need in any situation in which a virtual or physical page must be designed. To work in this role, you will need advanced reading and listening skills. The ideal person for this job should also have a critical eye for design. This job role requires someone who is very creative and great at problem-solving.
One of the most important tasks for the page layout designer is not only to create and design, but also to update information. The employer you are working for will provide hard-copy or electronic pages that should be updated with the most relevant text or image. You will need to know how to do this. As someone working in page layout design and employed by a company, you will need to understand the current advertising instructions for each project assigned to you.
Other than the personality skills mentioned above, someone working in this field of design will need to be able comfortable use technology. They will need to use a computer, printer or design tablet. There is a wide range of computer software, such as graphic design software InDesign or desktop publishing software Photoshop, which will be important for the designer to be comfortable using.
Education and Training Skills Needed
Education for someone considering a career in page layout and design is at least an undergraduate degree at the Bachelor's level. To prepare yourself for a career in page design, take courses in art, website design, graphic design or desktop publishing.
An internship program is also highly recommended as part of your education and training skill set. Not only does this give you experience as a layout designer, it also helps you confirm if this job role is suitable for you.
You may even consider a web page or layout designer certification. Certification is the process where your skills are tested using computer generated questions and tasks. If you successfully complete the computer examination, you will then be known as a certified designer.
Most of these certification programs allow you to register online. It might even be possible to complete a refresher course for the certification exam, to help you pass it. Free study material on page design is also available online. Training in this job role can lead to a further career as a Graphic Editor or Publishing Consultant.
